//Workshop on Image Interpretation - 2025
[This Workshop was part of Hybrid Choreographies: A 3-Day Workshop on Light, Sound & Motion, held at Delhi Technological University.]
This workshop indulged in a unique process of reading images. It adopted the method of the hermeneutic circle as its conceptual framework, which refers to the idea that our knowledge of any subject is derived from the interplay between our understanding of its constituent parts and that as a whole. Utilising this interpretative circle to read images, this workshop employed creative, handmade concealing mechanisms, to generate different interpretations of images. The 'concealing machanism' is a physical representation of the hermeneutic circle, as it allows us to see only parts of an image at a time, demonstrating how our understanding of the parts contributes to our understanding of the whole, and vice versa.
The workshop began with an interactive overview of the history of hermeneutics, followed by examples of art practices that interpret the works of others. After lunch, participants engaged in crafting a mechanism that enabled them to view an image in a new light. This interactive activity led to a session of image interpretation, where the constructed veil revealed the beauty of the circular process of interpretation.
