//Huzur! there is no clock tower in the city - 2026

An internal conflict between two communities was reportedly resolved by a clock tower in 19th-century Udaipur, India. This reading performance explores the reasons why the locals chose a clock tower as a symbol of peace and harmony, and how it contributed to resolving their internal disputes. By reflecting on the shift in the concept of time, the historical relationship between the Rajputs and the British, and the architectural design of the clock tower, this performance—drawing from ongoing PhD research—argues that the clock not only serves as a symbol of modernity but also creates the conditions for its continuous reproduction.

The performance takes place within the clock tower in Udaipur, where the rhythmic oscillation of the clock's pendulum and the chimes of the bell mark each hour, subtly indicating the half-hour in between.
